ED RYAN: "Make It So" (Independent)
by Kathy Fleischmann

If this CD doesn't put Long Island on the map, nothing will. Ed Ryan's solo debut, "Make It So" consists of well written songs with intelligent lyrics and jaw-dropping vocals. The first track, "Claustrophobia", for example, is a hook-laden tune reminiscent of mid Beatles-era pop along with "Imaginary Day", a song complete with Ringo percussion. (You Beatle fans will understand what I mean when you hear this tune.) Many of the lyrics are humorous as well. "Mouse In The House" tells the story of someone who has obviously taken something precious from another person and this is their musical revenge-- "So Pop! Off went the head. I never thought I'd want that cheese-eater dead. But it's just a scratch that I was itching. Now there's one less rat in my kitchen." "The Counting Of The Curs" has that pass-me-another-pint-of-black-and-tan feel to it, complete with Irish accented background vocals all performed by Ryan. "Joyful Noise" is a song that every musician will appreciate and understand. Ryan answers the never-ending question that "non-musicians" will ask, "Why bother performing at all?" with the simply put, "We can sing just to make a joyful noise." Incidentally, all of the vocals and instruments are performed by Ed and recorded with a notch above the rest professionalism by Mike Sapone (Sapone Productions, Bethpage).
